Around 80 participants had made it to Böblingen last week to be at 2017’s first meeting of the TecNet group ConnectedCar. TecNet – behind that is an event series initiated by Wirtschaftsförderung Region Stuttgart GmbH this past year that focuses on automated driving as well as the entire spectrum of the connected car.

And the range of topics around connected car is large, as the evening’s presentations proved once again. Oliver Messer, Managing Director at STAR SYSTEMS and the event’s official host, emphasized how the multitude of data generated in a car leads to new approaches for example in predictive logistics or in-car commerce and, by doing so, fostering the emergence of new business.

Thomas Quellmalz, Global Account Director at HERE, introduced the open location platform going by the same name, with which you can develop real-time location services from device, vehicle, infrastructure and other data that shall make our lives safer and more efficient. Afterwards, Dr. Michael Raschke of the startup Blickshift GmbH explained in his colorful and entertaining presentation, how the eye tracking technology can support steering a car in future, or even take over steering entirely, as well as what a linen napkin and a human brain have in common.

The evening’s second part focused on the technical implementation of autonomous driving. Paulos Chatzis, Manager at STAR ELECTRONICS, introduced the audience into the fineries of network systems as technical base for autonomous driving, before Dr.-Ing. Michael Frey of Karlsruher Institut für Technologie (KIT) talked about his experiences with the testing region for autonomous driving in Baden-Württemberg, where different technologies and service can be tried out already today.

Following was plenty of opportunity to exchange views, discuss the things heard and to end the evening in a relaxed atmosphere with drinks and snacks. „This was an all-round successful evening for us”, Oliver Messer summed up the TecNet group ConnectedCar’s meeting. „I think, as Experts in After Sales we were able to connect well digital connectivity with possible new business models and to demonstrate how new concept can emerge for after sales and other areas.”
